WHO & WHAT: Legendary hairstylist Serge Normant, who tends to the tresses of Hollywood A-listers like Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, and celebrated photographer Michael Thompson, who’s shot for major fashion and lifestyle magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair and Allure, recently teamed up to create this month’s cover feature. WHERE: Michael Thompson’s Studio in New York City. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY: The shoot had symbolic meaning for Normant. “I was here for the very first one held in this studio and this one—the last before Michael shutters it and moves to Oregon,” Normant says. COMMAND PERFORMANCE: This time around, the duo set their sights on capturing imagery to brand Meta Blonde Reviving Shampoo and Conditioner, the newest additions to Normant’s eponymous line of transformative haircare. “I love the way that Michael photographs women,” says Normant, who began his beauty career in Paris working for acclaimed hairdresser and mentor Bruno Pittini. “I split my time between working in his salon, teaching at his school and doing session work with Elle France magazine before moving to New York City to work at Bruno’s Madison Avenue establishment,” Normant says. “It was an amazing time to work in the hair and fashion industries.” CREAM OF THE CROP: Normant and Thompson’s muse for the shoot was model Samantha. “I loved her thick brows and felt she would be perfect to create simple looks on with a touch of sophistication—from wavy with wind to big unstructured hair,” Normant says. THREE’S COMPANY: Joining Normant on shoot day were good friends Marie Bariller, a French model and actress; makeup artist Leslie Lopez; and Ranee Flynn, one of his partners who’s responsible for all the creative and marketing for his product line. “Surrounding yourself with your friends—who happen to be very talented— sets you up for a great day,” Normant says. BON VOYAGE: His task done, Normant headed out to prepare for his trip to Los Angeles to style Julia Roberts’ hair for the Mirror Mirror premiere. “Every day is so exciting,” Normant says. ✂
