Sojourn and Jet Rhys Salon Create Academy Professional haircare line Sojourn and Jet Rhys Salon in San Diego have partnered to create The Sojourn Advanced Academy at Jet Rhys Salon, opening in July. The academy will offer five courses covering everything from hair basics to barbering and more, and will focus on celebrating the art and versatility of haircutting and styling while pushing stylists outside the boundaries of their day-to-day cutting styles. “We hope to educate and revitalize stylists and help them renew their dedication to their craft,” said Melissa Stone, creative director of Sojourn. “The Sojourn Advanced Academy at Jet Rhys Salon aims to remove stylists from their comfortable environments.” Each course will be a two-day experience, limited to a maximum of 20 people, with demonstrations and hands-on cutting and styling taught by Stone and a Jet Rhys representative. Matrix Chairs of Change Visits Illinois Homeless Shelter Sixty-four residents of Daybreak Center, a homeless shelter in Joliet, IL, received free haircuts as part of the Matrix Chairs of Change initiative. Matrix Salon Development Manager Wendy Chacon organized the event, which featured the participation of a team of 25 stylists from four Illinois salons—Images Salon and New Image Hair Studio & Spa in Joliet, Alexa Adams Salon in Lockport and Family Image Salon & Spa in Bolingbrook— FROM LEFT: Matrix’s Wendy Chacon and students from the Elite and Meredith Tye with Daybreak Center Beauty Institute in Westmont, resident George Mora IL, with students from a nearby community college also lending a hand. In addition to styling the residents, a favorite Daybreak staff member received a full makeover—cut, color, manicure and makeup—courtesy of Matrix Spread the Love Ambassadors Natalie Fox and Meredith Tye. The transformation left the staff member speechless, according to Chacon. “She had never had her hair colored before, and it was a shock for her to see herself without her gray,” Chacon said. “The residents were so happy for her.” Chacon also provided 125 gift bags full of Matrix products she had collected from Matrix events throughout the year. —J.T.
