The academy will offer five courses covering everything from hair basics to barbering and more, and will focus on celebrating the art and versatility of haircutting and styling while pushing stylists outside the boundaries of their day-to-day cutting styles. “We hope to educate and revitalize stylists and help them renew their dedication to their craft,” said Melissa Stone, creative director of Sojourn. “The Sojourn Advanced Academy at Jet Rhys Salon aims to remove stylists from their comfortable environments.” Each course will be a two-day experience, limited to a maximum of 20 people, with demonstrations and hands-on cutting and styling taught by Stone and a Jet Rhys representative. —J.T.

Matrix Chairs of Change Visits Illinois Homeless Shelter
Sixty-four residents of Daybreak Center, a homeless shelter in Joliet, IL, received free haircuts as part of the Matrix Chairs of Change initiative. Matrix Salon Development Manager Wendy Chacon organized the event, which featured the participation of a team of 25 stylists from four Illinois salons—Images Salon and New Image Hair Studio & Spa in Joliet, Alexa Adams Salon in Lockport and Family Image Salon & Spa in Bolingbrook—and students from the Elite Beauty Institute in Westmont, IL, with students from a nearby community college also lending a hand. In addition to styling the residents, a favorite Daybreak staff member received a full makeover—cut, color, manicure and makeup—courtesy of Matrix Spread the Love Ambassadors Natalie Fox and Meredith Tye. The transformation left the staff member speechless, according to Chacon. “She had never had her hair colored before, and it was a shock for her to see herself without her gray,” Chacon said. “The residents were so happy for her.” Chacon also provided 125 gift bags full of Matrix products she had collected from Matrix events throughout the year. —J.T.

American Salon Goes Backstage at Redken’s Road to NAHA Shoot

Redken Road to NAHA winners Jasmine Gibbs of Jazz it Up NYC salon in Brooklyn, NY, and Brooklyn Lane of La Ritz Salon and Spa in Stillwater, OK, recently shot their North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) entries at Industria Superstudio in New York City, and American Salon had exclusive access to all the behind-the-scenes action. As winners of the contest, Gibbs and Lane worked with their mentors, Redken Education Artistic Directors and past NAHA Master Hairstylists of the Year Kris Sorbie and Chris Baran, respectively, to create the concepts for their NAHA entries before traveling to New York City to do the shoots. To enter the Road to NAHA contest, stylists had to create a signature look on a live model using Redken products. At the shoot, American Salon Executive Editor Lotus Abrams spoke about the process with Gibbs, who will be entering the Texture and Newcomer categories, as well as Sorbie.

AS: Jasmine, how does it feel to be doing this shoot today, and what is it like working with Kris?
JG: It’s not my first shoot, but it’s my first big production shoot. I’m nervous and excited. I’m so grateful for everyone who’s helped the vision come to life. Kris has leant a helping hand every step of the way. We created a storyboard together for the models with every aspect from A to Z.

AS: Jasmine, tell us about your inspiration for the shoot.
JG: I’m doing three looks on three models using braids and waves to create texture. The idea is humanoid robots. I was inspired by the movie The Fifth Element (1997).

AS: Kris, tell us about the mentorship process.
KS: In general, I think it’s about being open to the education aspect. When I left beauty school I thought I knew it all, but being mentored requires being willing to learn a new way to do things. Jasmine’s been incredibly receptive to being coached. We’ve been working on the looks for three months. She was already great at cornrow braiding, so we worked on how to apply those skills for the shoot today.

AS: Jasmine, I understand you have an interesting story about how you first met Kris before winning the Redken Road to NAHA contest. Can you tell us about it?
JG: I heard Kris speaking on a Winn Claybaugh Masters CD while I was in school and I decided to e-mail her to see if she’d visit my school. I’d already graduated when she came to speak and my son was sick, so I couldn’t go. Kris contacted me later and asked to take me to lunch and encouraged me to enter the Redken Road to NAHA contest. When I won, I was surprised and happy to learn that Kris would be my mentor.

AS: Kris, what tips would you share with up-and-coming stylists who are interested in doing editorial photo shoots?
KS: At the casting, look at the face, not the hair. You can always add hair. At the shoot, believe in yourself and go for it. There are so many elements that go into a shoot though, so it’s also important to step away and look at the big picture sometimes. Finally, recognize when to stop. Sometimes simplicity is the best statement.

AS: Jasmine, what are your career goals?
JL: I’m excited to learn from the bottom up. I’m especially interested in working with wigs backstage in Broadway and theater. I’d also like the opportunity to work with Jo Blackwell-Preston.
