STRAIGHT AHEAD Retexturizing, the art and science of changing the hair’s natural wave patterns, has come a long way in recent years. The stick-straight styles of the 2000s have also evolved, giving way to bouncier, more natural waves. Clients are becoming more sophisticated too, demanding natural options for smooth and manageable hair and recognizing the value of after-care. A number of companies have recently introduced new systems in the realm of retexturizing, from salon services that use new technologies to achieve permanent straightening to lines that include home-use products to style hair and prolong the salon treatment. One company that has taken the full-range approach is TIGI ( tigihaircare. com ). Their new Sublime Smooth line, part of the company’s spring Hair Reborn launch, includes both an in-salon straightening service and products for home use. The company promises 14 days of up to 80 percent frizz reduction when clients follow up the service with daily use of TIGI Sublime Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner. The regimen also includes an intensive once-a-week treatment, Soothing Texture Re ne Masque, to increase manageability and keep the cuticle sealed. The Brazilian company Prolife International ( prolifeinternational .com.br ) has been researching the use of carbocisteine (one of the amino acids present in keratin) since the late 1990s. Their Pro Style Keratin Smoothing Treatment uses carbosistene, glioxilico acid and natural oils extracted from the Amazon Rainforest, including cupuaçu, a fruit related to cacao. The company has taken a novel approach to professional straightening, offering two systems differentiated by clients’ hair color: Pro Lyss for dark hair and Blond Brush for blonde or color-treated hair. Another new entry into the U.S. market is Spanish import Alcantara ( cool atiron.com ), whose unique straightening system uses a cool at iron. According to the company, the iron uses infrared technology to open the hair cuticle and ultrasound technology to vaporize the active keratin and penetrate the cuticle. A second pass seals the cuticle. The keratin used in their Keraliss Technique is naturally derived from duck feathers. The Keraliss Technique line also includes a Keratin Essential Shampoo, Keratin Essential Balm and Keratin Essential Thermic Hair Protection for home use.
