Matrix’s Brian and Sandra Smith fuse elements from the past and present to create looks that evoke timeless glamour. by KELLEy DONAHUE PHOTOGRAPHy by DAVID byUN It isn’t every day the call comes in to create a body of work to commemorate American Salon ’s 135 th anniversary, so when Matrix Artistic Directors Brian and Sandra Smith got such an invitation, they were thrilled. “Brian and I are so honored to contribute to hair history in the making,” Sandra says. To get the looks just right for the shoot, the Smiths enriched the hair with Matrix Gloss Sync Non-Alkaline Acid Color, a soon-to-be-released ammonia-free hue line that remains true to tone, before shifting their focus to creating to glamorous ’dos achieved with Marcel waving, figure-eight patterns and loops. “Dressing hair is making a strong resurgence and these techniques played a key role in allowing us to design modern shapes that will endure the test of time,” Brian says.
