American: The Beautiful

Iconic looks that made hair history.

In 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, the character Dorothy was defined as much by her hair as by those ruby slippers. Worn long and loose or in braids ending in bouncy curls, Dorothy’s hair conveyed youth, vitality and innocence. Most women would gladly brave the perils of Oz for those flowing, silky locks. But today, thanks to technology and the stylist’s magic, beautiful long hair can be found on this side of the rainbow.

American:
The Beautiful

The history of long hair as a fashion statement is shorter than you might think. In the Victorian era, a proper lady might grow her hair long but she wouldn’t dream of letting it down in public. In the 1920s, flappers bobbed their hair and short styles reigned for the next 40 years. It wasn’t until the 1960s that long, loose hair came into mainstream fashion in a big way, ironically spurred by the counter-culture. From the spiral perm craze of the 1970s to today’s soft waves, long hair has remained the go-to for women who want to look sexy, feminine and stylish. Matrix Artistic Directors Brian and Sandra Smith say it’s important that long hair is shiny, healthy, and cut in a style that’s both current and flattering to the client. “Hair that’s dull or damaged can add years,” Brian says. “Regular trims and conditioning treatments are very important. The new Matrix Biolage ExquisiteOil Replenishing Treatment is ideal for keeping hair in tip-top condition.” The Smiths say that highlights and dimension that make hair appear sun-kissed and seamless are the current color trend for long hair. “Balayage can create the kind of swept-in, natural highlights that you see on little kids near the summer’s end,” Sandra says. “This is great for enhancing the shape as well as the client’s features.”
