Natalie Salim A 20-something native Chicagoan, Natalie Salim has her sights—and her heart— set on a future career in the Big Apple. The talented hairdresser and makeup artist oozes with passion when she talks about her budding career. “My interest in the beauty industry spawned from my love of all things fashion-related,” Salim says. “Style is my favorite form of self-expression and I love that you can learn so much about a person based on the way they put themselves together. If I wasn’t doing hair and makeup, then I’d de nitely be the Bill Cunningham [a photographer who’s been a major presence on the streets of New York City for nearly 50 years] of Chicago street style,” Salim says. ✂ —Kelley Donahue AHA MOMENT Hair may not have been my rst vocation—I earned a B.A. in philosophy and Spanish from DePaul University and worked as an arts program director at a Montessori school—but I’ve always felt it’s been my calling. I consider my leap into the beauty industry a point of professional reincarnation. IN TRAINING While attending Pivot Point in Chicago, I began working at Abeille Beauty, where I’m always honing my skills and learning new techniques from the talented stylists I work with. STYLE PREFERENCES High-fashion editorial and catwalk looks. I swoon over every single style Julien d’Ys has created for the runway and Vogue magazine. BEAUTY MUST-HAVES Oribe Hair Care’s Dry Texturizing Spray is a favorite for the volume and body it adds to blow-outs. MY MENTOR Hair guru Sam McKnight and Peter Philips, the creative director of Chanel makeup. No one can create a symbiotic relationship between the beauty and fashion worlds better than these two creative forces. BIGGEST CHALLENGE Balancing my salon career and freelance work is a constant struggle, but I’m working on it. BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I EVER GOT As Joseph McKernan of Bang! Salon likes to remind me, “It’s just hair!” Chanel’s fall 2012 Paris-Bombay collection. The headpieces, dreadlocks, makeup and clothing are absolutely stunning. 28 American Salon August 2012 What inspires you? GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT The fashion gigs I do are so much fun, but what I’m most proud of is styling the hair and makeup for an ad campaign for The US Oncology Network that featured breast cancer patients and survivors. It was an amazing experience and I couldn’t have been more proud when I saw a pink bus decked out with my looks cruising around Chicago during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. NEXT STEP I’d like to style hair backstage at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. Also, I’m on a quest to someday have my handiwork grace the cover of a September Vogue .
