Shear Genius 1 1. FROMM The FlexIt shears from Fromm are made from surgical-grade steel, feature a 360-degree rotating thumb and come with three additional nger-ring sizes for a custom t. “To ensure proper t, the pinky should rest naturally on the nger rest and the ring nger and thumb should t securely in their rings between the rst and second knuckle,” says Kristi Metrick, Fromm Shears marketing manager. 2. KAMISORI Forged and designed in Japan, Kamisori’s Feather shear is perfect for slice-, blunt-and point-cutting. “Due to its light weight, I have the ability to achieve fast-paced cutting and extended usage without the usual wrist fatigue,” says platform stylist Masood Ghazimal of Tonic Salon in Toronto. 3. SUKOTTO Made out of high-grade steel and fused titanium, Sukutto SPWS shears are ideal for dry-cutting due to the design that allows the blades to slice effortlessly through dry hair. “Dry-, point-and slide-cutting require a sharp, high-quality steel tip and an exact 45 degree angled edge— like Sukotto shears—which makes performing these techniques effortless,” says Mark Hasche of PeterMark Salon in Delray Beach, FL. 4. SHARK FIN The Double Shark Fin shears are made from Japanese steel and feature ball bearings in the pivot area, a swivel thumb and sharp convex edges. “The Double Shark Fin handle gives me more contact with the shear so my slide-cutting is much more precise,” says Lisa Taylor, owner of Taylor’d Design Salon and Spa in Corydon, IN. 5. WASHI Ideally suited for slide-cutting on wet or dry hair, the AX Ultimate shear from Washi is forged from Japanese Hitachi steel and features a drop-nger style handle, a back screw tension adjuster and Washi’s new anti-push edge. “The handle design makes it easy to keep your hand in the proper cutting position as you work,” says stylist David Bullock. With top-notch design, functionality and comfort, these cutting tools should be in every stylist’s kit. —Aja Edwards MOTOR SKILLS Recreate these hot celebrity looks on your male clients. Total Recall star Colin Farrell’s sexy haircut is part of what de nes his bad boy persona. David Guerin, COLIN FARRELL global artistic director for Oster Professional , gave us the run-down for recreating the look using Oster’s EON Clipper, which features an adjustable and detachable titanium blade, ve length settings and six guide comb attachments. 1. Start with the number-six comb attachment on the EON Clipper and cut the sides and back all the way up to the crown of the head. 2. Next, remove the comb attachment and use the clipper-over-comb technique on the top and front bang area; make sure to adjust the blades to the middle setting to allow for more texture on the ends of the hair. 3. Finish the look with the EON blades at the closest setting and style with a wax. Savages star Taylor Kitsch’s disheveled, short cut gives the young actor a ruggedly sexy appearance. Andis Educator/ Guest Artist Lynn Yafchak shares how to achieve his look with the new PMX/BTX-T Combo clipper and trimmer; the PMX cuts wet or dry hair with an adjustable blade and eight attachment combs while the BTX-T trimmer has six attachment combs and a T-blade. 1. With the PMX clipper, start at the back and sides using a number-ve guard, and with the fore-and middle nger about a ½ inch from the head, point-cut the remaining hair working from knuckle to nger with a downward angle. 2. At the top, pick up sections of hair above the forehead and work back toward the crown, point-cutting each section for texture. Move to the side of the client and pick up the section above the eyebrow and point-cut the sections working across the head to the opposite eyebrow. 3. Using the BTX-T trimmer, clean up the neckline and TAYLOR KITSCH side burns. 2 3 4 5 60 American Salon August 2012 PHOTOGRAPHY: GETTY IMAGES (COLIN FARRELL, TAYLOR KITSCH)
