Holding a Note Leading hairstylists share techniques to achieve rock star styles, along with their favorite strong-hold products. To achieve Rihanna’s full style with shaved sides, Antonio Corral Calero , artistic director for Moroccanoil, recommends prepping wet hair with a small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment and then blow-drying it with Moroccanoil’s Ceramic Ionic Round Brush. Next, use a at iron to create smooth, silky strands. “To do a wavy RIHANNA variation of this look, start by applying Hydrating Styling Cream,” Corral Calero says. “Use the cream on dry hair and curl with a medium-barrel iron using your ngers to brush through the curls to create waves.” Finish both looks with Luminous Hairspray for touchable hold. “This is my favorite strong-hold nishing product,” Corral Calero says. “It leaves hair soft and moveable but with a long-lasting, natural nish.” Farouk Systems Creative Artist Anna Cantu says Jennifer Lopez’s high ballerina bun from the 2012 Oscars is a hot look that stylists can easily achieve on their clients. To get the look, Cantu advises coating the hair with Farouk CHI Silk Infusion before gathering it tightly into a high ponytail and securing. Apply CHI Infra Texture to the ponytail and lightly backcomb. Once done, wrap the hair into a round shape with JENNIFER LOPEZ texture and seal with CHI Helmet Head. “This style can be a great everyday NICKI MINAJ look with jeans as well,” Cantu says. “Nicki Minaj is always stepping out of the box and isn’t afraid to try a strong-hold style,” says Anthony Cole , lead stylist design team member for Sebastian Professional. To achieve a Minaj-inspired look or emulate one of her famous wig styles, like her candy-colored piled-high bun from the 2011 VMA’s, Cole says it will take a lot of backcombing and Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce Hairspray to provide an ultra rm, long-lasting hold. Cole also suggests mixing Mousse Forte and Texturizer to create the ultimate foundation. “Together, these two products create texture and fullness but still provide extreme hold,” he says. It’s not just women rockers who rely on high-hold styling products to create their signature hairstyles, male musicians like Adam Levine, front man for Maroon 5, also depend on them, says Stephanie Kocielski , vice president of education for John Paul Mitchell Systems.
