Natural Wonders Mother Earth has created an abundance of rich oils from various plants and seeds and haircare companies are tapping into the benefits of these wonder potions. —Jolene Turner Argan When it comes to oils, argan is topping many companies’ ingredients lists. Sourced from the pressed fruits or roots of the argan tree, native to Morocco, this power oil is chock full of essential fatty acids and lipids, including omega-9 oleic acid and omega-6 linoleic acid, all of which nourish, protect and repair the hair. The latest products starring argan include Agadir International Daily Volumizing Shampoo, a sulfate-and paraben-free formula that provides oomph without weighing hair down, ; Moroccanoil Root Boost, designed to thicken hair at the root while providing a moveable, weightless lift, ; and Organic Salon Systems Moroccan Organics Shampoo, featuring 100 percent certified-organic argan oil with other organic ingredients, including essential vitamins, amino and fatty acids and antioxidants, to fortify the hair, . Moringa Revered in many cultures for its purifying qualities, moringa oil, sourced from the moringa tree, contains potent antioxidants to protect strands from environmental aggressors while infusing shine. Matrix uses the oil in its Biolage ExquisiteOil line featuring Micro-Oil Shampoo, Oil Crème Conditioner and ExquisiteOil Replenishing Treatment. Olive Olive oil offers a slew of benefits when used on hair, including pumping up the shine. Pureology utilizes the oil, along with sunflower seed oil for softness, coconut oil for elasticity and jojoba seed oil for moisture, in its Precious Oil haircare system that includes the oil-infused Shamp’Oil. Babassu Full of nourishing lipids, babassu oil is derived from the babassu palm, native to the Amazon Rainforest. TIGI has combined a concentrated form of the oil with argan to create the Restorative IlluminOil, a Style Treat from TIGI’s Hair Reborn collection that is formulated for dry or damaged hair and designed to supply shine and smoothness. Passion Flower This light-textured oil sourced from the seeds of passion flowers is packed with vitamin C and calcium, and is considered ideal for treating dry skin— perfect for the scalp to encourage healthy hair growth. Bain de Terre has combined this oil with argan oil for its Argan Oil & Passion Flower Color Therapy Styling Oil to deliver shine and manageability to color-treated tresses. Sunflower Seed Sunflower seeds produce a benefit-rich oil that conditions and strengthens hair while providing color protection. Number 4 mixes the oil with argan oil and loads of other nourishing ingredients for its Lumiere d’hiver Fluoro5 Elixer Restore & Repair Oil from its Essentials collection. Ylang-Ylang With soothing and sweet aromatic qualities, the essential oil ylang-ylang from the tropical tree of the same name can create a state of well-being. Keune has combined ylang-ylang with hydrating palmarosa and argan oils for its dry hair treatment called So Pure Moisturizing Overnight Repair. Cranberry Rich in antioxidants, cranberry oil contains a unique natural balance of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids and vitamin E, all of which possess superb moisturizing properties. L’Oréal Professionnel has taken cranberry oil and coupled it with linseed oil, a derivative of an ancient Mediterranean flower also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, to create Mythic Oil Colour Glow Oil, which illuminates haircolor and protects from UV rays. 72 American Salon September 2012
