The newest Currie Hair, Skin & Nails,
located just outside Philadelphia, proves
that the difference is in the details.

When Randy Currie selected Wayne, PA as the site of his newest salon, he certainly chose well. The town is part of the suburban region of Philadelphia that runs along the Pennsylvania Railroad’s old Main Line—an area comprised of historic, affluent communities long considered to represent “old money.”
Opened in November, 2012, Currie Hair, Skin & Nails’ 3,750-square-foot space houses eight custom styling stations in addition to four for color services, two for manicures and two for pedicures. Those who seek to escape from the daily grind can do so in the establishment’s day spa, which boasts six treatment rooms, several steam showers and an inhalation room, a special steam room with eucalyptus oil vapor to open the sinuses. Enhancing the total experience is a beautiful interior accented with crisp, clean lines and architectural elements that convey this establishment is all about style and well-being. In addition to a spacious layout, the salon features a large, curved European translucent channel glass in the reception area; bamboo and gray slate flooring; dark bamboo walls; and oversized, black leather chairs and couches.
“While no design detail was spared, it’s extremely important to remember that a space is just a space unless you can staff it with the finest team,” says Currie. He devoted significant time and energy to finding the best managers, stylists, estheticians, massage therapists, nail technicians and assistants. “Above and beyond operating at a high skill level and representing the Currie brand, the staff is extremely adept at seeing to clients’ every need,” Currie says. “That’s critical for any established business that opens in a new location.” So is a menu packed with service offerings that aim to please. Popular options include the luxurious, 90-minute anti-aging Oxygen Facial designed to stimulate collagen production.
“Our newest Wayne outpost joins five other Currie, Hair, Skin & Nails locations that together serve between 8,500 to 12,000 guests on a monthly basis,” says Currie, who notes that guarding the integrity of the brand is of upmost importance to him. “To sustain growth, I’m always looking for ways to improve education, teamwork and guest services,” he says. “Our motto is: A salon and spa of distinctive design, staffed by professionals with an unwavering commitment to service and detail; so communication with team members is essential to keeping our focus on goals, both personal and professional.” ✂ —Kelley Donahue

Color Therapy
Off the Beaten Path
Early this year, pop diva Britney Spears took a break from her golden locks for a brunette hue, transforming her total look. Mike Petrizzi, artistic director for Zotos Professionals, notes the dramatic makeover from blonde to brunette can be done swiftly with the tint-back color technique. “Think of how you prime a wall before painting it; the overlay of colors will result in a polished, shiny and natural look,” Petrizzi says. He shares how to achieve Spears’s soft brown with this method, using two formulas and the Zotos Age Beautiful haircolor line.
Formula one: 1-¾ ounces of 8G Age Beautiful Liqui-Crème Demi Permanent plus ¼ ounce of 6RC Age Beautiful Demi Permanent and 2 ounces of Age Beautiful Demi Dedicated Developer. Formula two: 1-¾ ounces of 6G Age Beautiful Liqui-Crème Demi Permanent and ¼ ounce of 4RM Age Beautiful Liqui-Crème Demi Permanent with 2 ounces of Age Beautiful Demi Dedicated Developer.
First apply formula one to the roots and midlengths of the hair and process for 15 minutes before adding the formula to the ends. Process for 10 more minutes then rinse, lightly shampoo and condition. Once the hair is 85 percent dry, apply formula two using the same method, saturating the roots and mid-lengths first for a 15-minute process time before coloring the ends. Petrizzi recommends deep conditioning with Age Beautiful Intense Strengthening Treatment to create a superior shine. —J.T.

Blonde Moment
Take hair to a higher level this spring by lifting clients’ winter shades to livelier and blonder hues. “After creating softer, golden looks through the fall and winter, I like to see brighter, white blonde tones,” says Ouidad Creative Color Director Ian Dorey. He prefers an all-over iridescent-like pearly tone, as seen here on The Carrie Diaries star AnnaSophia Robb’s luscious, luminous curls. To brighten things up for a look like Robb’s, Dorey lightens the base color of the hair, then heavily paints strands, focusing around the face and at the ends. Once the painted hair has lightened past a pale yellow, he glosses with a slightly pearl tone such as Wella Color Touch 10/81 before conditioning with Ouidad Curl Recovery Melt-Down Extreme Repair Mask to nourish the hair. —K.H.

Infinity and Beyond
For eight levels of lift that yield pure and luminous blonde results, L’Oréal Professionnel presents Infinie Platine, an adaptable, precise powder lightener for all-over coverage and highlight services. The high-adherence formula is ideal for balayage and doesn’t run during application. Colorists can offer three lightening services—Infinie Moon for an icy light blonde, Infinie Solar for a warm medium-blonde and Infinie Star for the lightest blonde—to create a shade that suits each client. —J.B.

Time-pressed clients are constantly on the lookout for quick touch-up services to keep their pesky roots or grays at bay while preserving their beautiful haircolor. Enter Nelson Chan, who just unveiled a Color Touch Up Bar at his Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills, CA, that offers two innovative services. Partial Sun-Kissed Highlights reduces the color processing time to 15 minutes and the number of foils to 15. “It’s applied to the regrowth area to reduce the dark, ‘rooty’ look and make the hair appear lighter and natural,” says Chan, who notes that the abbreviated service excludes a blow-out. Base Color Retouch is another creative solution for covering regrowth and gray roots. A tint of any professional haircolor is applied to the scalp to cover up to two inches of roots and a special heat lamp from Japan reduces the processing time to 15 minutes. “The new Base Color Retouch service excludes highlights and is best-suited to those clients who usually have single-process haircoloring,” Chan says. —K.D.

Touch and Go
Blonde hues can grow dull and dreary, especially after winter months. To the rescue comes GKhair Silver Shampoo, which brightens and illuminates locks to perfection. Safe for clients with textured or color-treated hair, the formula neutralizes red tones and brings out the highlights in blonde, platinum and silver shades, leaving strands soft and smooth sans sulfates, parabens, gluten or paraffin. —K.H.

Shape Shifter
Chic sophistication with a bit of an edge is definitely on trend this summer and, says Matrix Artistic Director Ammon Carver, the look can easily be achieved through styling as opposed to a whole new cut. Carver created this faux flat-top style reminiscent of Jamaican singer, actress and model Grace Jones’s classic ’do by understanding the model’s type of hair and utilizing the proper tools for a fresh, fashion-forward look. “Today, women are more and more into shapes and styles that stand out,” Carver says. “This bold geometric structure is exactly the kind of ‘look at me’ statement that confident women today should make.” Below, Carver shares the steps to achieve the look; he notes coarse, textured hair makes for better molding and mid-length locks help to build the silhouette.
1 On freshly washed hair, apply a liberal amount of Matrix Total Results Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil and work through with fingers.
2 Add a bit of Design Pulse Go Big Extra Strong Hold Mousse to the hairline. Using a Denman brush, direct all hair up and away from the hairline in the front and back of the head. Dry all hair this way.
3Use a micro crimping-iron on all hair except for a 2-inch section around the entire hairline.
4Secure a large cushion (or multiple cushions) to the top of the head with hairpins. Once hair is fastened at the desired height, backcomb sections all the way around the cushion.
5Using Total Results Amplify Hairspray to set locks as you work, gently brush hair up and over the cushion(s) and pin with light tension to create a flat effect on the top of the head. ✂ —Jolene Turner

Green Day
Not only is emerald the birthstone for May, it’s also Pantone’s color of the year for 2013. Translating the trend to nails puts the wearer’s personality in the spotlight, according to Zoya color developer Rebecca Isa. “Strong gem tones make a statement of confidence,” she says. “When it’s a green it’s also quite playful and a little bit naughty.” Opt for a true emerald hue and an iridescent finish with Zoya Holly, or keep it rich and matte with OPI Jade is the New Black. For a twist on the classic emerald shade, try CND Shellac Power Polish in Limeade, which offers a lighter touch with tons of shimmer.;;—K.F.

Shine On Fingertips can sparkle for weeks on end with OPI’s first glitter gel shades, available in the new GelColor Kits. The first kit features three solid and three shimmer shades from Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful collection such as Lights of Emerald City (seen here); a second presents six favorites from Euro Centrale, including the glimmering All GelColor polishes are 100 percent gel for chip-free manicures that last up to two weeks and can be easily removed in 15 minutes with fingertip soak-off sleeves. —J.B.

Hang Loose
Nestled in the eco-friendly and surfing-dominated community of Leucadia near San Diego is Leu Leu Beauty Bar, a hair and nail salon where modern design and natural products reign supreme. Owner Chai Collins’s goal when she opened the salon last September was to create a social, comfortable atmosphere where locals could come for an extra level of care without worrying about chemicals in products. “You feel like you’re getting extra pampering and it’s a treat to be there,” Collins says. The space was transformed into a French provincial boutique, featuring white, vintage furniture scavenged from local antique shops and Etsy, an online store filled with artisan-made gifts and décor, along with accent pieces in pink and turquoise. “It’s laid back and you feel like you could be in your own living room, talking with your friends,” Collins says. The staff of five nail pros offers three levels of indulgence, from speedy Eco Express to the all-inclusive Le Suprême, complete with the homemade sugar cane and essential oil scrub, a massage, and Zoya and CND Shellac colors. Frequent visitors can opt for a monthly membership and kids ages 3 to 12 are treated to the Little Birdie Menu for pint-size natural pampering. Leu Leu rolls out the pink carpet for moms’ nights out, birthday parties, wedding prep and more. Collins hopes to expand her pampering to Los Angeles and beyond. —J.B.

Clean Sweep
On top of cleanliness, skincare companies have developed facial toners that promise even more health benefits for the skin.
Along with a proper daily skincare routine, using a quality toner after cleansing is key. The primary function of most toners is to rid the skin of any remnants of dirt and makeup, but they are also vital in restoring natural pH levels. “Facial toners are an essential piece of the puzzle to complexion perfection,” says Lydia Sarfati, Repêchage CEO and founder. “Cleansers can affect the pH level of your skin, and your toner will help to restore those levels. By skipping a facial toner, you’re leaving your skin out of whack.”
In addition to restoring natural pH levels, many toners go beyond the basics. Repêchage’s Vita Cura Renewal Toner with Salicylic Acid, which exfoliates while replenishing pH levels.
Skincare company Vitaphenol also tackles exfoliation with its Anti-Aging Toner, which is 10 percent glycolic acid. Formulated to gently clean and balance skin, the glycolic acid also promotes cell turnover, revealing smoother skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This alcohol-free toner also includes comfrey extract—known for its anti-inflammatory properties—and grapefruit extract, which contains high levels of vitamins C and E.
With a focus on firming, the AGE Smart Antioxidant HydraMist from Dermalogica is designed to provide immediate flash-firming effects to lift and tighten the skin. Hydration and plumping ingredients include arginine and lysine polypeptide that bind sugars in the body to prevent the formation of Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), biochemical triggers that manifest skin aging; and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP), a nonacidic, stable form of vitamin C that stimulates collagen formation. With a slew of other skin replenishing ingredients, the toner is ultimately formulated to provide the skin with vitamins for antioxidant protection.; repechage

Cucumber MojiToe Pedicure
ESSpa Kozmetika Organic Skincare, Pittsburgh
This 75-minute pedicure treatment is designed for pure relaxation in the spring and summer months. While the client enjoys a classic mojito cocktail, her feet are soaked in a copper tub filled with hot water, mint leaves, raw sugar cane and Puerto Rican rum. “The idea is that the sugar inherent in the liquor acts as a gentle exfoliant to help remove dead skin for smoothness and enhanced circulation,” says Eva Kerschbaumer, the salon’s CEO and lead esthetician. After the soak, an exfoliating foot scrub employs the salon’s exclusive mixture of raw turbano sugar, fresh limes, and organic shea butter and olive oil. Next, calluses are removed, nails are trimmed and cuticles are cleaned before a foot and leg massage with the salon’s organic triple butter balm featuring shea, cocoa and pumpkin. The feet are dipped in a vanilla-bean paraffin bath, and once all materials and oils are removed, the nails are painted with Zoya polish.

Champagne & Roses Signature Spa Manicure
Three-13 Salon, Spa and Boutique, Marietta, GA
This decadent treatment incorporates numerous Repêchage products for total indulgence. To begin, cleanse the client’s hands and arms with Sea Spa Body Wash, then apply Sea Spa Hand Cream before dipping the hands into a warm paraffin bath. Wrap the hands in plastic bags and place in terry-cloth hand mitts. After 5 to 7 minutes, remove the mitts and paraffin, then let the hands soak for 3 to 5 minutes in a mixture of warm water, champagne and Sea Spa Mineral Bath Salts to soften the cuticle. Prep nails for polish by filing and trimming cuticles before exfoliating the hands and arms with Pomegranate Cran-Apple All Over Body Scrub. Rinse off the scrub and remove completely with a warm, steamed towel soaked with Peppermint Essential Oil. Apply Sea Spa Hand Cream again for a full hand and arm massage; then massage Essential Oil of Seaweed directly into the cuticles and remove any excess before polishing the nails. A glass of champagne accompanies the treatment for the ultimate relaxing experience.

Glitter Ombré Manicure
Nails By Males, Tempe, AZ
For these uber glamorous, sparkly nails, co-owner of Nails by Males Tai Nguyen applies one coat of Gelish Foundation Base Gel to clean nails and cures with an OPI LED Lamp for 30 seconds. A second coat is applied and a solid-color glitter is sprinkled on one half of the nail while a different glitter color is set on the other half to achieve an ombré effect. After nails are cured for 30 seconds, another coat of the Gelish Foundation Base Gel is applied, cured for 30 seconds and finished with Gelish Foundation Top It Off Gel, also cured for 30 seconds. Nail surfaces are smoothed with a fine buffer. One last topcoat is applied and excess gel is cleaned off with rubbing alcohol.

Therapy Pedicure
Seven Seas Spa & Salon, Sunny Isles Beach, FL
Combining tropical plant ingredients with a nurturing touch, this pedicure utilizes Aveda’s Caribbean Therapy products to leave feet soft and hydrated. Feet are immersed in a luxurious footbath of hot water and Caribbean mango, lime and aloe nourishing oils, from which the rejuvenating aromas of vetiver grass, bay leaf and amyris are released. After the soak, feet are scrubbed with a powder blend of Caribbean ginger, sea salt and cane sugar followed by an application of a self-warming seaweed masque with red and brown algae and mineral salt to help purify and detoxify the skin. A foot and leg massage with a lush, hydrating body crème containing Caribbean mango and cocoa butter completes the service.

On the Runway
Using the right products makes for fashion-worthy nails.

At Behnaz Sarafpour’s Spring 2013 show, nails took on a whimsical, fairy dust appearance through a prismatic, glitter-fade technique using CND Additives in Spectrum Shimmer and Antique Bronze.

Seen on the runway during New York Fashion Week for Lauren Moffatt’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, nails were coated with a base color in OPI’s Don’t Touch My Tutu and a diagonal strip of the eye-popping A Roll in the Hague on top, matching the orange-red hues incorporated in Moffatt’s line.

For Jenni Kayne’s Spring/Summer 2013 New York Fashion Week presentation, nude nails were adorned with bright yellow tips, courtesy of OPI’s Need Sunglasses, exemplifying her collection’s theme of surf sophistication in lean silhouettes and separates.
