Beautiful Beginning WHO AND WHAT: Accomplished Los Angeles photographer Steven Lippman, renowned for producing highly textured, mood-driven photographs featuring numerous celebrities, beauty and lifestyle campaigns, and mane man Phillip Wilson, the international creative director of ColorProof Haircare, collaborated to create this month’s cover feature. WHERE: The shoot was held in December at Pier 59 Studios West, a photography and multimedia studio complex situated in the historic Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA. WHY: The body of work was created to commemorate the launch of Jim and Cheryl Markham’s new ColorProof Evolved Color Care range. “The line fuses the latest innovations in technology with best-in-class ingredients to create a new standard in color care,” says Jim, ColorProof Haircare founder and CEO. PREP WORK: The creative forces chose four models from top agencies in Los Angeles. “We wanted to achieve a range of looks on different hair textures and colors, from natural and sleek to windswept and stylized coifs,” Wilson says. STYLE LIST: Wilson worked at a fast clip to design the hair for the shoot. “I worked with the natural fabric of the models’ hair, crafting styles that showcased their natural beauty and created a halo effect for their hair,” Wilson says. LESS IS MORE: Many of the shots were done with minimal clothing and set design. “We opted for a gray backlit background to keep the focus on the hair,” Jim says. CANDID CAMERA: Videographer Howard Taksen was on hand to fi lm the models and Wilson cutting hair, as well as to capture Jim’s passion for the products and Cheryl’s commitment to worthy causes like City of Hope. “It was a really fun and productive two days,” Jim says. ✂ —Kelley Donahue HAIR HOW-TO To create this modern Afro look, Phillip Wilson prepped the hair with ColorProof PureRelease Instant Detangle and HeatProof Anti-Frizz Blow Dry Crème for thermal protection. He applied PlushLocks Leave-In Smooth, then blow-dried and lifted strands in the root area using an Afro pick and PowderFix Instant Volume Texture to amplify hair. UltraMarathon Strong Hold Hairspray provides the perfect fi nish.
