SCOTCH WITH A TWIST If Scotch Naturals ’ delightful spring hues—Lemon Highlander (seen here), Paisley Martini, Canal Street Daisy, and Celtic Mix and Affi nity—aren’t tempting enough, then how about the polish line’s revolutionary plant-based formulas? The nail care system, which includes a base and top coat, is now designed to last up to seven days without chipping. scotchnaturals.com —K.D. U SPRING INTO ACTION At Le Techniques Salon in Sainte Genevieve, MO, the month of April means celebrating the planet and the arrival of spring. Owner Debbie Ramer promotes going green on April 21, by offering clients 10 percent off their retail purchases when they bring their own canvas shopping bag. Each spring the salon also offers the Revitalize and Renew manicure and pedicure special using client favorite Manicure/ Pedicure by OPI Royal Verbena Scrub. The natural sugar crystals smooth away rough skin, while the crisp citrus scent and aromatic botanical extracts leave hands and feet feeling illuminated and perfectly primed for spring’s cheery polish shades. —M.R. Green Footprint Put environmentally conscious clients’ minds at ease while softening tough calluses with the SpaRitual Eco Foot File, made from 100 percent biodegradable materials. The reusable corn resin paddle is petrochemical-and DBP-free and features disposable pads with a dual-sided 80/150 grit that are injected with an antibacterial solution. Foot exfoliant tools are known bacteria trappers, but the combination of hydroxide and phytoalexin, a naturally occurring antimicrobial compound, makes for safe callus diminishing. sparitual.com —M.R. 56 American Salon April 2012 PHOTOGRAPHY: VEER.COM (ANGEL FOODS): GREG MARINO (ORANGE YOU PRETTY) sing food in skincare is nothing new; women have probably been putting cucumbers on their eyes since the Romans brought them back from India 3,000 years ago. What is new is the way technology has enabled the skin-healthy elements in certain foods to be isolated and infused into products you can use in the salon. Dr. Marina Peredo of Spatique Medical Spa in Smithtown, NY, offers a service she calls the Organic-Green Facial that uses Epicuren products featuring green tea, ginger and seaweed extract, all foodstuffs with anti-infl ammatory properties. “We have a lot of clients with sensitive skin, allergies or other infl ammatory conditions,” she says, adding that natural ingredients are less likely to cause adverse reactions than synthetic ones. Sundãri , a skincare line based on the ancient practice of Ayurveda, includes several products that contain food-based ingredients, including Chamomile Eye Oil and a fi rming mask containing Indian asparagus. Peredo is a fan of Epicuren because of the company’s commitment to natural ingredients, but she says it’s also possible to concoct salon skincare treatments from things you’d normally fi nd in the kitchen. “Sugar is great for exfoliation,” says Peredo, who recommends mixing sugar, whole milk or cream and a few drops of oil for a terrifi c signature body scrub service. Eggs can be used as a mask—whites only for oily skin, whole eggs for dry. An avocado mask delivers vitamin E and tons of nourishing oil. Choose foods that are fresh and, if possible, organic. As Peredo puts it, “If it’s not good enough to eat, it’s not good enough to put on your skin.” epicuren.com ; sundari.com —K.F. Face Value Nail File China Glaze Papaya Punch
