American: The Beautiful A t the height of the 1920s’ bob boom, fashion icon Coco Chanel and screen star Clara Bow had opted for the look. They weren’t alone. In New York City, the demand for the style reached a feverish pitch when 2,000 women a day were having their hair styled. The lines were said to stretch outside hair salons and barbershops and continue around the block. In 1923, the razor-cut shingle bob, which tapered the hairline into a V shape, arrived on the scene. In the decades that followed, the iconic style remained a hair fashion staple, only to cause another style commotion in 1963 when Vidal Sassoon snipped actress Nancy Kwan’s long locks into a graduated bob shape. “The cut, which is nearing its 100-year anniversary, has been seen on a number of celebs over the years,” says Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders. “Some wear it with fringe, others with layers or razored edges. To me the bob is still the ultimate classic today; hence, for our relaunch of Aveda’s Full Spectrum haircolor, we took the classic cut and enhanced it with beautiful color, putting our botanical stamp on it.” 2011 Jennifer Aniston 2010 Dannii Minogue 2011 Helen Mirren 2010 Molly Ringwald 2008 Katie Holmes DID YOU KNOW? The bob spawned another key beauty essential. In 1922, the bobby pin made its debut to helpwomen manage and hold their newly shorn bobbed styles in place.
